In more than 43 percent of the Lower Franconian communities – including various ones in Rhön and Grabfeld – there are still “white spots” in the cell phone coverage, in which there is still no access to the cell phone via one of the telecommunication providers – the proverbial deadlock exists. This follows from the government’s response to a request from the Würzburg SPD member of parliament, Volkmar Halbleib. Of the 305 municipalities in Lower Franconia, a total of 133 municipalities have at least one district where there is no reliable voice mobile communications, the MP wrote in a statement.
For Halbleib, who, according to his own information, has been dealing with the mobile radio coverage of Main Franconia since 2017, a more than sobering answer: “It was clear to me that we are still very far from being reachable nationwide. However, the fact that we have clear gaps in more than 4 out of 10 municipalities shows that too little has happened since the Bavarian mobile radio program in September 2018. For the affected communities, this is a location disadvantage that should not be underestimated if there is radio silence in many places. It is still a disadvantage for rural areas. ”Halbleib’s assessment.
Cities well supplied
This can also be seen in the response from the State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. While there are no large dead spots in the cities of Aschaffenburg, Schweinfurt and Würzburg, numerous municipalities in the individual districts are affected.
According to the ministry, eleven municipalities in the Rhön-Grabfeld district are affected. Accordingly, the municipalities of Aubstadt, Fladungen, Höchheim, Hohenroth, Bad Königshofen, Mellrichstadt, Nordheim, Oberelsbach, Saal, Sulzfeld and Willmars are among the Funkloch communities.
It is unclear which districts are affected. For Halbleib it is incomprehensible that the state government was unable to provide a correspondingly detailed overview of the districts affected, which are excluded from mobile communications, although this was exactly asked for. “It seems as if the state government does not have a clear overview of which districts are affected by the radio gaps. But that would be of central importance, especially for closing the gaps ”.
Free State has to do more
The state government also has no information about the so-called “gray spots”, in which only a telecommunications company provides a radio service, the MP said. “The fact that the state government neither knows the exact white spots nor knows where there is a very weak supply is more than worrying. How to quickly create a better mobile connection in the affected areas during this blind flight remains the secret of the state government, ”said Halbleib.
From the point of view of Halbleib, the Free State can and must do more, but relies too heavily on the federal government that the mobile operators are obliged to provide comprehensive mobile coverage as part of the auction of the 5G licenses, the message says.
