Number of Violations by Illegal Migrants Increasing, Says Latvian State Border Guard

The last few days show that the number of violations by illegal migrants recorded by the State Border Guard is increasing, said the head of the State Border Guard Guntis Pujāts in an interview on Latvian Television program “Morning Panorama”.

“January, the beginning of February could be called calm, the last days show that the number of violations is again with an increasing trend. In February, there were 75 attempts to illegally cross the border, in March there are already 46, and this is only the beginning of the month,” Pujāts said.

He stated that, taking into account the increase in the number of violations, the issue of restoring the enhanced border protection regime will be brought up.

Speaking about the infrastructure of the border, Pujāts expressed his suspicion that its damage is “directly carried out by service officials of the opposite side”.

“It is evident that this is not just an initiative of the violators themselves,” he continued.

Last year, 13,863 people were prevented from illegally crossing the state border, and 428 people were admitted for humanitarian reasons. On the other hand, in 2022, 5,286 people’s attempts to illegally cross the Latvia-Belarus border were prevented, while 217 people were not prevented from crossing the border due to humanitarian reasons.

In connection with the pressure of illegal immigration, until February 10 of this year, in several administrative territories on the border of Belarus, a strengthened operating regime of the border protection system was in force, which last August replaced the state of emergency established by the government in August 2021 and repeatedly extended.
