Overall, the number of unemployed in the district of the Freiburg Employment Agency fell for the sixth time in a row in July. As of the reporting date, a total of 14 031 women and men were unemployed in Freiburg and the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Emmendingen. That is 337 people fewer than a month earlier. The unemployment rate fell by 0.1 points to 3.7 percent. Youth unemployment, on the other hand, rose by 0.3 points to 2.6 percent, which is typical for July.

“Fewer unemployed in July. We did not expect that. I am all the more pleased about it,” said Andreas Finke, CEO of the Freiburg Employment Agency, on the current development on the labor market. Usually in July it is mainly young women and men who start voluntary service or study after the holidays or who are not taken on after their training, who register temporarily as unemployed. That was also the case this year, but to the surprise of many, it did not lead to an increase in unemployment. “The spring swing is now catching up with a delay, which the measures to contain the corona pandemic in March and April had prevented,” says Finke.
