The arrival of Ukrainian refugees to the Netherlands is decreasing. In the first three months of this year, some 9,200 Ukrainians came to our country, according to Statistics Netherlands. That was the smallest number since Russia started the war against the neighboring country.
The Russian army invaded Ukraine on February 24 last year. In the first quarter of that year, some 25,000 Ukrainians eventually came to the Netherlands. Ukrainians thus formed 30 percent of the total number of immigrants who came to our country in that period.
While the number of Ukrainian refugees fell at the beginning of this year, immigration from other countries increased. But emigration also rose: more people left the Netherlands than in the same period a year earlier. Among them are also Ukrainians returning to their country.
On balance, in the first three months of 2023, about 35,000 inhabitants were added through migration. That is 18,000 fewer than in the first quarter of 2022.
The fact that more people come to the Netherlands than go abroad is the only reason why the population is still growing. Statistics Netherlands figures show that more people died than were born in the first quarter. That has been the case for a few years now.
According to figures published on Wednesday, Ukrainians are still the largest group of all people who come here. Other large groups are Syrians (about 3,900 people in the first quarter), Turks (about 2,800 people) and Indians (about 2,100 people). Of the EU residents who settled in the Netherlands, Poles formed the largest group with about 2,600 immigrants.
