Number of stabbings continues to rise, almost 750 incidents in 2020 | NOW

Emergency services increasingly have to take action in connection with a stabbing. Almost 750 alarms were issued this year for a stabbing incident, marking 2020 with a dubious record.

In the first eight months of this year, 744 reports were sent via P2000 in connection with a stabbing. In the same period last year there were 572, an increase of more than 30 percent.

This is evident from one analysis of the number of P2000 reports regarding stabbing incidents by Alarmeringen.nl.

For the whole of 2019, the counter came to 949, which means that 2020 appears to be heading towards a new record proportionally. There are only two provinces where the number of reported stabbing incidents has decreased (Limburg and Noord-Holland).

A worrying increase in Utrecht and Flevoland

There is an increase in all other provinces. The provinces of Utrecht and Flevoland are head and shoulders above the rest. Here the number rose by 700 and 600 percent respectively.

Of the major cities, Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam are leading, with the capital showing a sharp decline. Almost all other major cities show a significant increase in the number of stabbing incidents.

The number of stabbing incidents against boas is increasing

Richard Gerrits of the BOA ACP union reported on Monday morning NPO Radio 1 that boas have been regularly attacked with stabbing weapons in public transport, at stations and in recreational areas over the past two weeks. He cannot yet name concrete numbers.

“The excesses against people who carry out inspections are becoming increasingly fierce,” said Gerrits. “It seems like the police and enforcement have become the face of corona and all the discontent people have at the moment.”
