Number of schools do not wait and introduce mandatory masking

Chairman Paul Rosenmöller of the VO council, the association of secondary schools, told the NPO Radio 1 program News and Co that Illy’s statements had annoyed him: “Those statements are bad. It causes unrest, it causes confusion.”

Rosenmöller said that this discussion should be conducted in the OMT and not in the media. He focused on chairman Jaap van Dissel: “Try to keep the frogs in the cart. This creates a dynamic that is contrary to what we all want: to keep the schools open.”

The VO council already announced yesterday to have asked the RIVM to provide more clarity. They want to know whether the current measures are sufficient and receive specific advice on mouth masks.

Limited number of schools

In addition, Rosenmöller emphasized that the number of schools that introduce a masking obligation on their own initiative is limited: “Every example of a school that deviates from the policy is reported in the media. There are 1,450 secondary schools in the Netherlands. There are certainly a number of them. and increasingly, who make face masks mandatory when moving within school. That is allowed. But what you want is clarity, no questions such as why they are and we are not? “

Yet he also showed understanding for those school leaders: “You will only be a school leader with 1500 students and a few hundred staff members and if there is an outbreak, you will suddenly be in the position to defend yourself.”

According to him, however, it is the cabinet’s turn: “We ask Prime Minister Rutte to reconfirm that these measures are allowed, but not necessary. That the current line is actually sufficient.”

In his press conference, Prime Minister Rutte and Minister De Jonge briefly discussed the situation at the schools. According to them, the measures are sufficient. Rutte: “Schools work hard to create a protected environment. Children must stay at home if they have complaints and if someone in the family is infected. No exception.”
