Number of positive tests reported (5,609) greater than daily mean (4,906) | NOW

In the past 24 hours, 5,609 positive corona tests were registered at the RIVM. That is about 700 tests more than the daily average of the past week (4,906).

Because the daily figures can fluctuate a lot, NU.nl looks at the average of the last seven days. At the moment no trend seems visible. The instability of the figures was a reason for experts from RIVM and the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) to advise against easing in December.

There were 1,110 more positive tests reported on Sunday than on Saturday (4,499). In total, the Netherlands now has more than half a million positive corona tests.

On Sunday, the number of registered deaths rose by 25. That does not mean that all these COVID-19 patients died in the past 24 hours. Information is sometimes passed on to RIVM with some delay.

In total there are currently seventeen hundred corona patients in the hospital, eleven fewer than the previous day. This occupancy rate is already falling slightly for the sixth day in a row, according to figures from the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS) on Sunday. There are 506 corona patients in intensive care units (ICs), 5 fewer than Saturday.

Lockdown may last until mid-January

At the beginning of next week, the government will again ask the OMT for advice on possible relaxation in December. On December 8, the cabinet will take a decision on which measures will apply during the holidays.

Minister Hugo de Jonge (Public Health) previously tempered expectations about this. He expects the partial lockdown to continue after mid-January.

According to Prime Minister Mark Rutte, the current figures do not yet offer the “comfort” to say that we are heading towards easing in December, he said at a press conference after the Council of Ministers on Friday. However, he thinks it is still too early to rule out relaxation. “It is also good to have a look at how things will continue in the coming days,” said Rutte.
