The number of people receiving social assistance in our country fell below 400,000 for the first time since 2013. The number of social assistance recipients decreased in all age groups. This is the slowest among the over 45s, reports Statistics Netherlands.
For six consecutive quarters the number of people entitled to social assistance has decreased compared to the previous year. “Year-over-year differences are getting smaller,” says Statistics Netherlands. Even so, the number jumped to 396,000 this fall. The number fell below 400,000 for the first time since April 2013.
The decrease in the number of social assistance benefits in one year was greatest among young people up to 27 years of age. That number dropped to 33,000. In the 27 to 45 age group, there were still 135,000 at the end of September.
With 228,000 people on social assistance, those over 45 make up the largest group.
