The number of people on benefits also increased in the previous quarter, according to Statistics Netherlands. This concerns both born and raised Dutch people and people with a migration background. The increase is greatest among people with a western migration background.
The number of young people up to the age of 27 receiving benefits increased by 8 percent at the end of September compared to a year earlier. In the age group from 28 to the state pension age, the increase is much less high, at approximately 1 percent.
According to Statistics Netherlands, the inflow into social assistance benefits for the third consecutive quarter is higher than the outflow. In the second quarter of 2020, more than 27,000 people were on benefits, while almost 17,000 people left. In the last quarter of 2019, the difference between those two groups was less than a thousand people. That quarter was the first since 2017 that the number of welfare recipients no longer decreased.
