HAARLEM Due to the May holiday, fewer people were tested for the corona virus last week. As a result, the number of new cases during the past week is slightly lower than the week before. But that gives a distorted picture. The percentage of positive tests is actually increasing.

RURAL Between last Monday and Sunday, 410,855 people had a corona test, reports the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). That is 16 percent less than the week before. Young people in particular were less tested. Of all those tests, 11.7 percent were positive, compared to 10.6 percent in the week before.

The so-called reproduction number fell below 1. That means that the outbreak could slowly die out. The number now stands at 0.94. This means that a group of 100 people infects an average of 94 others, who in turn transmit the coronavirus to about 88 people.
In the past week, 1,633 people have been newly admitted to hospital, less than 1,774 in the week before. 377 of them ended up in intensive care, which is almost the same as the previous week.
