The number of new corona cases is rising again. Between Friday morning and Saturday morning, 15,667 positive tests were registered. For a Saturday that is the highest number in almost three weeks. The increase was expected because the new omikron variant of the coronavirus has become dominant.
In the past seven days, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) received 95,467 reports of positive tests. That is 10 percent more than in the seven days before. This is the fastest weekly increase since November 27.
On average, it amounts to 13,638 positive tests per day. That average rose for the fourth day in a row and is now at its highest level since December 20.
Amsterdam further sharpened its record. In the past day, 1403 positive tests have been registered there. Never before has a Dutch municipality had so many new cases in one day. The old record dates from Friday, when there were (after correction) 1,395 confirmed infections. In Amsterdam, the omikron variant has probably spread further than in the rest of the country.
In Rotterdam, 666 residents were told that the corona virus was found in them. This is followed by Utrecht (419), The Hague (348), Almere (268) and Tilburg (264). Only on Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog no one tested positive.

The number of deaths remains fairly stable for the time being. In the past day, RIVM received a message that 27 people have died as a result of their corona infection. For a Saturday, that’s the lowest number since October 30, but that figure may be skewed by New Year’s Eve. On days off, fewer deaths are usually reported to RIVM. It is possible that more people have died, but that the others will still be registered in the coming days.
Among the 27 deceased corona patients are two people from Rotterdam and two residents of Vaals. In addition, 23 municipalities had one death. In the past seven days, 248 deaths have been reported, an average of about 35 per day. That is roughly comparable to the level in the past period.
More than 3.1 million positive tests have been registered since the start of the epidemic almost two years ago. Almost 21,000 people are certain that they have died of the corona virus. The actual numbers of infections and deaths are higher.
