The number of millionaires has increased again in 2021. Of all Dutch households, 4 percent have assets of one million or more. Their average capital has remained the same at 1.6 million euros compared to 2020.
On 1 January 2021, a total of 317,000 households owned assets of at least one million. That is 32,000 more than in 2020, Statistics Netherlands reports. The number of millionaire households is therefore growing for the seventh year in a row.
On average, the assets of millionaire households remained the same at 1.6 million euros compared to a year earlier. The average non-millionaire did see growing wealth. The non-millionaire had an average of 74,000 euros in 2021. That is 18,000 euros more than a year earlier.
The millionaire group still had 21 times more wealth than the average non-millionaire. Almost two out of three millionaires owned between 1 and 2 million euros. A smaller part had assets of 10 million euros or more, namely 3 percent. The assets include the value of the owner-occupied home and any mortgage debt.

Many self-employed and retired people
Statistics Netherlands sees that more than 60 percent of the main income earners of millionaire households had a job as their main source of income. The rest of the group was mostly retired.
Among the working population, two-thirds were self-employed, for example as a director-major shareholder or as an independent entrepreneur. Relatively many millionaires are self-employed, particularly in the financial services and agricultural sectors.
In agriculture, especially in dairy farms and greengrocers, 42 percent of the self-employed were millionaires. A large part of their assets is in land and real estate.
Due to rising prices, a millionaire can buy less with the same money than in previous years. If Statistics Netherlands corrects the value of a euro, there will be approximately 21,000 more millionaires in 2021 than a year earlier.
The group of millionaires has been growing since 2014. In the preceding crisis years, the number of millionaires in the Netherlands remained about the same.
