These are indications that things are not going any better, says data analyst Marino van Zelst, who keeps track of the corona figures on a daily basis. “It may indicate that willingness to test is decreasing. In addition, the self-quick tests make the picture even more cloudy. It is becoming increasingly difficult to interpret what the contamination figures mean, but things will only go in the right direction when both the number of positive tests and the percentage of positive tests go down. . “
Especially striking is the development of the number of infections when broken down by age. All groups show a decrease. Except one: the 20-29 year olds.
Most mobile group
The figures keep track of the presumed first day of illness. For the 20-29 year olds, the turnaround from a decreasing to an increasing trend in the number of infections is around 27 April. “You can never really say whether a development in infections can be related to one moment, unless you test everyone before and afterwards,” says field epidemiologist Amrish Baidjoe.
He is not surprised that infections are increasing in this age group. “Transmission works in such a way that you always first see an increase in the most mobile group: those are the 20-29 year olds. We also saw that in July last year.”
The graph below clearly shows the peak in 20-29 year olds. The decrease in the last days is because the figures are shown on the basis of the first day of illness. The picture of the most recent days is therefore not yet complete.
