The number of corona infections in Belgium has doubled in a week. This is apparent from the preliminary figures of the health institute Sciensano.

Between December 28 and January 3, an average of 13,815 new infections found, an increase of 96 percent compared to a week earlier. Every day, an average of about 68,400 tests were taken, 19.9 percent of which gave a positive result. The reproduction number is clocking in at 1.15, which means the pandemic is gaining momentum.
The number of hospital admissions also rises. Between December 31 and January 6, an average of 171.7 people had to be hospitalized with Covid-19 every day. In total there are now 1,883 in Belgian hospitals (+4 percent). There are currently 474 IC beds occupied by corona patients (-12 percent).
The number of death fell by a quarter in the period from December 28 to January 3, to an average of 23 per day. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 28,400 corona deaths in our country.
In the meantime, about 4.7 million Belgians have had a booster shot with a coronavaccin got.
