Number of incidents with disinfectant is increasing

In 2020, the NVIC received 47,235 telephone inquiries about poisonings in 34,093 people and 9,056 animals. In addition, 139,347 times use was made of the website www.toxicen.info, where care providers themselves can consult the toxicological information of the NVIC.

Significant increase
From March 2020, the Netherlands was under the spell of the corona pandemic. People started working at home, had to keep a distance of one and a half meters and they often cleaned their hands with hand alcohol. This has led to a significant increase in the number of reports of people accidentally getting splashes in their eyes and children accidentally taking a sip of the hand alcohol. Ultimately, the NVIC was consulted by telephone on 552 human exposures to hand disinfectants in 2020, compared to an average of 107 reports per year in the previous five years.
