In 2021, the number of hospital admissions was the lowest in 20 years. Statistics from the National Health Information Center (NCZI) say last year state health facilities recorded a total of 942,376 hospitalizations, with an average stay of 6.5 days. But the number of deaths of hospitalized patients has instead increased compared to 2020 by 35.7% to 42,411, a number that also includes patients who died from COVID-19.
The most common reasons for hospitalization were cardiovascular diseases (14.6%), tumors (10.2%) and respiratory diseases (9.8%), for people who were more than 55 and 74 years old (34.1% of the total). The highest number of hospitalizations in 2021 was recorded in the Bratislava region, followed by the Trnava region.
