For the first time since mid-September, the number of deaths last week was lower than the number normal for the time of year. This is probably because more and more people have been vaccinated against COVID-19, although there is no hard evidence for this yet. reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) Friday.
Last week an estimated 3,200 people died. That’s 300 less than a week earlier and 200 less than normal for the time of year. The latter is determined by statisticians by looking at mortality figures of recent years and demographic trends.
“We cannot prove it yet”, answers sociologist Tanja Traag of Statistics Netherlands when asked whether the effect of the vaccination campaign can be seen here. “But it would make sense if one has to do with the other.”
The number of deaths is now lower than normal among people over 80 and long-term care users – such as nursing home residents. During the corona pandemic, mortality in these groups was high for a long time. Therefore, these groups were quickly given the opportunity to vaccinate.
RIVM previously reported that the number of infections among nursing home residents is decreasing and sees this as an effect of the vaccination campaign. People over 70 were also tested less positive for the virus in the past week.
