Number of corona infections shoots up, ‘but not comparable to last summer’

Then 15,526 positive tests were reported. On average, 3780 infections per day were detected in the past week. A week earlier, there was an average of 2,217 infections per day.

New omikron variants

The rising figures are probably related to the newer omikron variants BA.4 and BA.5, which have been spreading over our country for a few weeks now. They are more contagious, but it does not seem as yet that these variants are also more pathogenic.

RIVM reports that the situation today cannot be compared with a year ago. Then the number of infections due to the delta variant that went around increased. “The current omikron variants are less sickening than the delta variant last summer,” RIVM writes.

The institute warns that with a higher number of infections, the pressure on healthcare can increase again. At the moment, the rising infection rates are already reflected in hospital admissions. For the first time in more than a month, more than 600 people with corona are in hospital.

Also more hospital admissions

The National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS) reports that almost all corona patients are in the nursing wards. There are now 22 corona patients in intensive care units.

Although there is an increase in hospitals, the numbers are still relatively low. There are currently significantly fewer patients with corona in hospital compared to the last wave.

From the end of October to the end of April, for about six months, the hospitals continuously treated more than a thousand corona patients. At the peak in December, more than 2800 people with corona were in nursing wards and ICUs.
