Between 13 and 26 September, 3,835 pupils and 372 teaching staff from Flemish education tested positive for the corona virus. That corresponds to 0.32 and 0.22 percent respectively, according to figures from the CLBs, which Flemish Education Minister Ben Weyts announced on Wednesday. It is remarkable that the figures in primary education are increasing, while the trend in secondary education is declining.

The infections resulted in a total of 10,533 students (0.88 percent) and 417 teaching staff (0.25 percent) having to be quarantined. That is twice as many compared to the first two weeks of September.
It is striking that the increase is stronger in the third week of September. In the fourth week, the increase weakens again.
There is also a difference between the levels of education. In primary education, the figures have increased in this reporting period, but in secondary education there is a downward trend. That is the positive result of the high vaccination rate among the students, says the minister. According to the most recent figures, 84 percent of 12 to 17-year-olds in Flanders have already received at least one shot.
“A lot of people have returned from a trip abroad. We had therefore expected an increase in the numbers after a few weeks of school. It is encouraging that the effect of the returnees is weakening in the most recent figures,” said Minister Weyts. “A month after the schools reopened, there has been no major new wave in the hospitals either. The successful vaccination campaign in Flanders clearly offers a lot of protection.”
