Number of corona deaths in Brazil remains high, healthcare system under great pressure | NOW

In Brazil, 2,216 people have died from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the third day in a row that more than 2,000 corona deaths were recorded. More than 85,000 new infections were also reported, the second largest number of daily infections to date. Experts warn that in many parts of the country the health care system is on the verge of collapse.

On Wednesday there were 2,286 deaths a day record. On Thursday, it concerned 2,233 deaths. In total, 275,101 corona deaths have now been reported in Brazil, the second largest in the world after the United States. 11.3 million infections have been diagnosed since the start of the pandemic.

Brazil is facing a significant revival of the lung virus. According to health authorities, a mutation of the coronavirus discovered in Brazil is largely responsible for this.

The Brazilian healthcare system is under severe pressure from the corona outbreak. In the country’s fifteen largest cities, 90 percent of all intensive care beds are occupied. According to the Fiocruz research institute in Rio de Janeiro, a total collapse of the healthcare system is threatening in large parts of the country.

WHO is concerned about the situation

WHO boss Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concern about the situation in Brazil on Friday. “If serious measures are not taken, the upward trend that is now engulfing the health system will result in more deaths,” Ghebreyesus said at a news conference in Geneva. He also warned that neighboring countries could also be affected by the Brazilian corona outbreak.

President Jair Bolsonaro, who has always downplayed the seriousness of the virus and says he does not want a corona prick, has meanwhile been facing increasing criticism for his corona approach. Many Brazilians feel that the vaccination campaign against COVID-19 is getting off to a much too slow start. Less than 3 percent of the population has been vaccinated so far.
