Number of confirmed corona infections stable, BQ.1 variant now dominant | Coronavirus

The number of confirmed corona infections remains stable, according to weekly data from the RIVM. The number of hospital admissions also hardly changes. Over the past week, 347 people have ended up in hospital due to coronavirus complaints.

Over the past seven days, RIVM has recorded 5,900 positive corona tests. This is 1.5% more than the previous week. The actual number may be higher, because RIVM only records corona test results that have been carried out at GGD locations. The institution does not provide self-tests.

BQ.1, a subvariant of the omikron variant, has become the dominant variant of the coronavirus in recent weeks. RIVM expects this variant to stay that way for some time. There is no evidence that it makes people sicker than previous variants.

Since the number of positive tests says little about the state of the epidemic these days, RIVM also uses other ways to monitor the spread of the corona virus. For example, the institute measures how many virus particles are present in wastewater. You can see an increase there, but compared to previous corona waves, these are low concentrations.

The number of confirmed corona infections is on the rise in nursing homes. Last week, more than eight hundred residents tested positive there.
