The number of Colombians deported by Panama to their country of origin has been on the rise since 2023, according to a statement from the Special Administrative Unit for Migration.
According to the note from the immigration authority, released on the occasion of the return of a group of Colombians who arrived at the José María Córdova airport in Medellín last Monday, the 20th, these flights have been served since 2016.
He added that the number of migrants deported in 2022 was 121, by 2023 the figure rose to 378, and so far this year 365 have been received.
This procedure is part of the bilateral agreements between Colombia and Panama, and is carried out in strict compliance with national and international regulations on immigration, the statement said.
He also stressed that these types of operations are routine and form part of the constant work of Migración Colombia to guarantee order and legality at the country’s borders.
He also pointed out that the people deported by the Panamanian government are those who entered its territory illegally and have been handed over to the Colombian authorities for appropriate care.
As part of their regular work, Colombian Migration officials first verify the full identity of the passengers and ensure that they have no legal issues. If so, they are placed at the disposal of the National Police. Finally, the process of entering the country is carried out, the note continued.
