Number of Centenarians in the Netherlands and Regional Variations

There are 2,572 people aged 100 or older living in the Netherlands. Compared to other European countries, there are relatively few. The province of Zeeland is home to the most people over the age of 100. This is evident from figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).

In Zeeland there are 4.2 people aged 100 or older per thousand people over 80, followed by Friesland with 4 people over 100 per thousand people over 80. The fewest centenarians live in Limburg (2.2 per thousand people over 80) and North Brabant (2.4 per thousand people over 80).

In recent decades, CBS has seen that the number of people over 100 is increasing every year. This trend is expected to continue. “This is because, compared to previous generations, more children were born and older people are living longer,” CBS said. The statistics agency predicts that by 2040 there will be more than five thousand people aged 100 or older. There are now 2,572, and the vast majority of them are women: 2,172.

Throughout the Netherlands, there are three people aged 100 or older for every thousand people over 80. That is relatively little: “The Netherlands belongs to the tail end of the middle bracket,” says CBS. Relatively speaking, Ireland has the most people over 100: 15.4 people over 100 per thousand people over 80. Hungary, France and Greece also score high. Latvia, the Czech Republic, Romania, Croatia and Bulgaria have the fewest people over 100 per thousand people over 80. In the latter country, there is not even one person over 100 for every thousand people over 80.
