The unexpected and desired return in January Nudist with his new album Clairvoyanceafter more than five years since their separation in 2018, they confirmed to us that indeed “it wasn’t a joke / it was an omen” that the creative talent of Leo Mateos was not exhausted and that this return was not just a purely commercial strategy, unlike the return of other legendary bands. That is why live being the natural atmosphere of the group, Leo has scheduled a list of concerts precisely in small and notable venues in each city in the national territory, avoiding festival marketing and being totally aware of having the support of a loyal audience that enjoys personal and honest proposals.
We were clear that in Nudist We were not going to find nods to stadium anthems or jingles for advertisements, but rather a handful of songs that, if before they were more tortuous and self-destructive following a single direction, have now matured towards eclectic experimentation and flow in cosmic and psychedelic atmospheres with a vocabulary, if possible even more symbolic and mysterious.
So after the good reception by critics of this new return and long-awaited album, the expectation was maximum among his faithful. Without reaching the sold-out due to the inclement weather that did not accompany the Sevillian night, the follow-up was notable and the excitement was palpable among an attentive audience that was between forty and fifty.
Perhaps the lysergic sound of “Lo que hid las Arizónicas”, the song chosen to open, was not the most appropriate to celebrate the long-awaited return. A boot that sounded a bit cold, with no real power connection Nudist with their new proposal and their audience, something that they did achieve with a rescue of their old repertoire, “Láser Love”, with which they sounded with much more intensity thanks to a forceful drums and the sound of the distorted guitar of Leo with which that “pain in my chest” begins to be felt more deeply.
He returns to his last album with the intimate “Carta a Nina” where we perceive a lyrical turn towards nature and the environmentalism that he evokes throughout the album through abstract metaphors (“Golden apples go up / To the cybersecurity tower”). But it is not until the fourth song where she recovers her usual dose of heartbreak with “Mil mirrors” from her acclaimed album. Synthetics, and manages to connect fully with the public. From here a new one to his recent album with “Bisontes albinos” and “Elvira / Santuario Salvaje” demonstrating that he still has the talent to compose round hymns and full technical mastery of his new proposal. They both sound powerful with those sharp guitars and the plucking behind a wall of distortion, which excite a dedicated audience that follows the lyrics of those choruses that pierce the soul.
Leave room for another of his previous works Voyeur Amateur with that intense ballad “Úrsula there is snow at home”, with that heartbreaking lyricism that Leo dominates perfectly and that emerges once again in his latest work with the song that follows “La Isla del diablo”, where he abandons loving toxicity with courage to honestly say “Come, I love you / Wield this iron”. As he himself confirms “The feminine world has always allowed me to better explore the world of suffering and empathy”.
Emotional ecstasy explodes with one of its emblematic songs, “It’s been fun.” Exciting and impeccable sound makes the audience fall at their feet. But it is in “Modern Doses” where he achieves his crowning moment at the level of technical, emotional and poetic virtuosity. A ballad that warms the heart with a clean guitar sound and a piercing riff, achieving that intensity through a haze of noise where Leo gives himself fully to his followers.
The apotheosis comes after the encore, with the long-awaited “The Son of God,” that hypnotic hymn, which Leo Mateos he sang among the audience hidden under his hood. Quality Mandanga for a show where the singer transmutes to become the son of God who walks among his faithful. It ends with two fetish compositions, “I promise to hurt you” and “The devil was good to me”, where he demonstrates once again that the terrain where he moves like a fish in water is that of heartbreak, which is what he intimately connects with his public. As if time had not passed, Leo offers us just what we want, restlessness and self-destruction through post-punk guitars in a shoegaze atmosphere.
There is no doubt that Nudist They return in a big way, maintaining that unquestionable mark of a cult band and with an overwhelming personality, standing out among the many bands with identical proposals that swarm on the national scene. For the happiness of his followers and satisfaction of Mateos, We were able to confirm live and direct that “there is still snow at home” and for a while…
