She thinks that the protesters’ outcry mainly stems from the fact that children and adults both swim naked on such a nude swimming day. “If it had only been children, we could at least have discussed the extent to which those children have the right to swim naked with other children.”

According to Nijman, naturists have a different experience of being naked. “It doesn’t mean they’re always naked. They have appointments when they can and can’t, but they’re broader than with people who don’t identify as naturists.” She finds it sad that naturists are lumped together with pedosexuals.

Nude recreation in the Netherlands
The Netherlands has 2.5 million nude holidaymakers. Sauna visitors are not included in this. It concerns people who go to the sauna and also recreate nude in a different way. There are 60 naturist campsites, 92 nudist beaches and 33 swimming pools in the Netherlands where nude swims are organised.
