Authority Russia would use nuclear weapons if there was an existential threat. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this.
“We have a concept of internal security and it is public, you can read all the reasons for using nuclear weapons. So if it is an existential threat to our country, then it (nuclear) can be used according to our (way),” Peskov said. Reuters, Wednesday (23/3/2022). Peskov’s statement was echoed in an English-language interview.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered Russia’s nuclear forces to be on high alert last month. In line with the order, the Russian Defense Ministry said the nuclear missile force had been on standby since February 28.
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres spoke about the potential for nuclear war. He said bad things could happen.
“The prospect of nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, is now returning to the realm of possibility,” Guterres added.
Mariupol City Bombed
Russia continues to attack the city of Mariupol, Ukraine. Recently 2 large bombs fell on the city.
Reported by Reuters, the roar of gunfire has not subsided in the city of Mariupol since the first day of the Russian invasion. Access to food, clean water, and even electricity is very limited.
“There is nothing left there,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
The number of victims as a result of the bombing is not yet known. Ukrainian authorities say Russia attacked a theatre, art school and other public buildings.
