Nuclear Safety Exercises Planned Near Golfech Power Plant in Tarn-et-Garonne, France

On June 7 and 8, nuclear safety exercises are to take place near the Golfech power plant (Tarn-et-Garonne). Enough to prepare the inhabitants for the possibility of a nuclear accident. But that doesn’t unleash the crowds.

Living near a nuclear power plant means living with the possibility of an accident. In Golfech (Tarn-et-Garonne) and its surroundings, exercises are planned for Wednesday June 7 and Thursday June 8. A public meeting, addressing the 106 municipalities within a radius of 20 km around the plant, was therefore organized on Thursday 1 is June, in the presence of the population, mayors, EDF personnel and State representatives.

Vincent Roberti, Prefect of Tarn-et-Garonne, tells us: “It is a question of putting oneself in the conditions closest to reality to carry out a simulation, which we will discover at the last moment, and to prepare to react in times of crisis to see how the services will be coordinated and be as close as possible to reality to be ready if one day, we don’t hope, it happens”.

During this life-size exercise, the population will discover the new alert modes.

“The first alert, classic and known, is the sirens that go off to alert the populationexplains Émilie Saussine, Chief of Staff to the Prefect of Tarn-et-Garonne. The second alert is the FR alert device which is a new device put in place, and which allows you to receive a message with instructions to follow on your mobile phone. The entire population present in the area concerned by the risk receives this message.

Scheduled to alert the population, the meeting did not move the crowds. In the streets of Golfech, not everyone seemed aware of the holding of this meeting. Many people questioned do not consider themselves sufficiently prepared in the event of an alert.

“I must have been ten years old during the last exercise, so I don’t think I’m well prepared, I don’t even know where my iodine sachets are” smiles a mother. Further down the streets, an older lady does not remember the date of the last exercise. She was still working, she says. If she thinks that former Golfecho residents, like her, are better informed, she finds these evacuation drills particularly useful. “at least every five years” intended for “new arrivals”.

New arrivals, or not, everyone will be affected by the exercises, on June 7 and 8. Hopefully this is just exercises.
