Nuclear power plants are already protected from drones

“It’s about evolution. Nuclear power plants are secured by law, but developments in technologies and threats are still ahead, which we reflect on, and we are constantly renewing the mosaic of the protection system, ”explained Daniel Rous, Director of CEZ Group Protection at Tuesday, at the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant site.

It was in Dukovany that a complete renewal of the obsolete system had to be carried out, which reached the finals these days after three years. The billion-dollar investment was crowned by a new laser detection, the aim of which is to protect the space of selected buildings against new threats. It is a state-of-the-art technology used, for example, in self-driving cars.

“We have transferred the technology of laser detection to the security area,” said Martin Vojtek from the supplier TacticaWare. The unique complex uses multi-channel detectors – firing beams and processes their reflection from solid obstacles.

“It’s a very precise device. It works with an accuracy of two to three centimeters, while the beams are fired up to twenty times per second. The simplest 16-channel detector transmits more than a million reflections at the same time, “Vojtek pointed out.

The obtained data provide a perfect overview of the guarded area. The system can distinguish its disturbance by a bird or animal from an artificial object. In the event of an alarm, the police, whose special unit is in the control center of the power plant’s physical protection, would intervene.

“We have not yet detected drones at nuclear power plants,” Rous warned, adding that incorporating state-of-the-art technology into the protection system is pure prevention. However, it is justified by developments in the world.
