Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty: Difficult deliberations in New York – Politics

At the beginning of the year, the five official nuclear powers published a joint declaration in which the USA, Russia, France, Great Britain and China stated that a “nuclear war cannot be won and must never be waged”. They described avoiding wars between the nuclear-weapon states and reducing strategic risks as “our primary responsibility”. Washington and Moscow had launched a dialogue on strategic stability with which they wanted to explore opportunities for arms control agreements. Shortly after President Joe Biden took office, they had renewed the New Start Treaty, the last remaining agreement that imposes limits on the arsenals of the two former superpowers.
