Ñublense’s Loss to Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito in the Copa Sudamericana

Ñublense, the only Chilean representative to survive in the Conmebol cups, lost. The Red Devils opened their round of 16 series of the Copa Sudamericana with a 1-0 loss against Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito, a cast with much more experience in these games. An appearance by his scorer was enough to break parity.

Once again, the chillanejos played as locals at the Ester Roa de Concepción stadium, the same as in the Copa Libertadores and in the playoff series against Audax Italiano. In front were the Ecuadorians, who returned to the country for this tournament, since they faced Magallanes in the group phase of the South American. The great threat from the visitors was the presence from the start of Paolo Guerrero, the great signing of the team, after he terminated his contract with Racing.

For the clash, Jaime García had a 3-5-2 drawing, with the full-backs (Rebolledo and Campusano) wide open in attack, in order to give the team width. Defensively, that line of three became five. Ñublense was encouraged at the beginning, with control of the ball and positioning itself in the rival field, however that did not imply a great deepening in the Ecuadorian area. The initial 45 minutes were discreet, verging on boring, in which each club risked little.

The first shot on goal in the Liga de Quito was in the 30’s. Then, when the initial period ended, the left side Quiñónez tried from distance, but high. Nothing else. The participation of the archers, Nicola Pérez and the experienced Alexander Domínguez, was very little. The game was crying out for a coup de effect, something that would give it an injection of more rhythm, in both tables.

For the complement, Ñublense gave him precisely another intensity and went to look for him. In minute 53, they set it up well and Juan Leiva reached the area but did not connect well with an assist from Rebolledo. García included Oyarzo, changing the scheme, leaving four in the back and three up front. When the national team hinted at something, LDU struck first.

Leaving space for a top attacker like Paolo Guerrero can be suicidal for a rival. When game time was up, a cross ended with the Peruvian controlling the ball in the area (Caroca notoriously failed in timing and left the striker free space) and calmly defining before Nicola Pérez’s bailing.

The Peruvian national team intervened little during the development of the game, however each intervention generated danger in the area of Chillana. Meanwhile, the national team did not touch the precise key to hurt Domínguez’s goal. The attempts were insufficient, even more so when the result was a round deal for the whites. A header from Zalazar and a deflected shot from Campusano were the most dangerous for the Chileans.

Next Thursday, August 10, will be the rematch, at the altitude of Quito. The winner of this tie will go to the quarterfinals against the winner of the key between San Lorenzo and Sao Paulo. Today, in Buenos Aires, the Cyclone beat the Brazilians 1-0.
