Chairman of the DPP NasDem Party Effendy Choirie or Gus Choi said the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU) cannot prohibit its citizens from participating. Gus Choi believes that NU members can support any political party.
“So there are two NU, terms that have developed within NU. There are structural NU, cultural NU. Structural NU is called Nahdliyin residents, Nahdliyin residents are allowed, even NU is also structural too, that’s khitoh,” said Gus Choi at NasDem Tower, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (5/9/2023).
“So NU has a khitoh, what does that mean? It means that all its citizens can support any political party, whoever is allowed to join the presidential-cawapres coalition, with guidelines there are nine main political guidelines for Nahdlatul Ulama,” he continued.
Because of that, he emphasized that NU members are free to choose to form a coalition with anyone. Gus Choi said there was no prohibition for NU members to join parties and form coalitions.
“So, NU members are free, where they want to go freely. So PBNU can’t prohibit its members, which party cadres to join, coalition with whom, there’s no prohibition, it’s free,” he said.
Even so, said Gus Choi, with Cak Imin. He asked Cak Imin to no longer make fun of politics related to Cak Imin.
“Including Cak Imin, he must be released, he must no longer be distorted, he can no longer be ridiculed, that is his right. Moreover, he is a party leader who was born from the womb of Nahdlatul Ulama, he has legal rights,” he explained.
Furthermore, Gus Choi said Cak Imin was the leader that Nahdliyin wanted. He hopes that with Cak Imin’s presence, he can make up for Anies Baswedan’s shortcomings.
“According to a specific survey, Nahdliyin residents were asked, who do Nahdliyin residents want as vice presidential candidate? Muhaimin is the most superior, so Cak Imin is the candidate for vice president for Nahdlatul Ulama members,” he said.
Previously, PBNU chairman Yahya Cholil Staquf or Gus Yahya emphasized PBNU’s position in the 2024 presidential election. Yahya did not want to be involved in next year’s political events.
Gus Yahya also did not hesitate to give sanctions to PBNU officials who acted on behalf of NU to support one of the presidential and vice presidential candidates. According to him, PBNU has also given sanctions to administrators who violate these rules.
“But if there are NU officials who then use NU institutions for practical political activities, we immediately reprimand them. Yesterday there were several administrators at the district level who we reprimanded for for example holding a presidential candidate declaration at the NU office. This is not allowed. We reprimand him. But for example he is personally going here and there is his personal right,” said Gus Yahya.
“If there is a presidential candidate on behalf of NU but not NU administrators, yes we can also say that is not true. But we can’t give any sanctions if they are not administrators,” he added.
