Omtzigt says the unrest within his party “hurts him”. He also saw “too little focus on solutions to the problems in the country” during the months he was at home. “That is not an accusation, but an observation.” Without referring specifically to the resignation of the secretaries of state, he also said that he sometimes fears the “harsh methods” in Dutch politics. He hopes he can contribute to “a little change”.
Omtzigt’s temporary departure from the House of Representatives was not his first step aside. In 2021, he also temporarily withdrew as a Member of Parliament, following disagreements within his party at the time, the Christian Democratic CDA. Eventually Omtzigt left the party altogether and later founded the NSC.
Politicians from different parties joined the new party and the NSC immediately won 20 seats in the elections of November 2023. The main problem of the NSC, however, is that the party largely revolves around Omtzigt. After his temporary step back, it was clear that his party would not do as well without him at the forefront.

Guest 2: I agree with [Guest 1]. The CDA’s challenges were compounded by internal strife and a lack of a cohesive vision. Omtzigt’s resignation served as a wake-up call, but the party’s ability to move forward will depend on how well they engage with voters and propose viable solutions to their concerns. The questions surrounding Omtzigt’s role and the direction of the CDA are crucial for understanding the landscape of Dutch politics going forward.
Dear Guests, thank you for agreeing to do this interview with us. We are excited to discuss the recent developments in Dutch politics surrounding Pieter Omtzigt‘s return to the House of Representatives on a part-time basis due to health reasons. To begin, could you please introduce yourselves and share your perspectives on the impact of Pieter Omtzigt on Dutch politics and the formation of the NSC party?
Guest 1: My name is [Guest 1], and I’m a political analyst who has been closely following the developments within the NSC party. I believe that Pieter Omtzigt’s return to the House of Representatives is an interesting development in Dutch politics because it highlights both the strengths and weaknesses of the party. His departure last year was essential in forming the NSC, as it gave the party a clear direction and purpose. However, his return raises questions about whether the party can sustain its momentum without him at the helm.
Guest 2: Hello, I’m [Guest 2], and I’m a member of the CDA party. I see Pieter Omtzigt’s temporary resignation as a strategic move by the CDA to distance themselves from the unrest within their ranks. However, I also acknowledge that his leadership and contribution to the party were significant, and it’s unclear how effective the CDA will be without him. On the formation of the NSC, I believe it was a natural outcome of political realignment in the Netherlands. The NSC has brought together politicians from different parties, and it will be interesting to see how they navigate their differences and maintain their momentum.
Now, moving on to the reasons for his temporary resignation last year, Omtzigt mentioned “too little focus on solutions to the problems in the country.” Could you elaborate on your views on the challenges faced by the CDA at the time and the impact of his resignation on the party’s ability to address these issues?
Guest 1: Well, the CDA had been struggling for some time before Pieter Omtzigt’s resignation. They had lost their way, and their policies didn’t resonate with the electorate anymore. Omtzigt’s resignation was a symbol of this disconnect. However, I think the CDA
