NSC Party Leadership to Discuss Cabinet Formation Progress with Supporters – Latest Updates & Decisions

Feb 10, 2024 at 11:17 PM Update: 2 hours ago

The NSC party leadership will discuss the progress of the cabinet formation with its supporters in two sessions. Party chairman Bert van Boggelen emphasizes that there will be no choice for the members.

According to the NSC statutes, only the House of Representatives faction decides on possible cabinet participation. Leader Pieter Omtzigt decided last week to stop coalition negotiations with PVV, VVD and BBB.

The Telegraph reported on Saturday that NSC wants to check with its members whether a right-wing majority cabinet is a good idea. Party chairman Van Boggelen confirmed this later. “We do not want to communicate with the members through the media, but really want to talk to each other.”

In a newsletter to members, NSC announced that it would like to enter into discussions. “We have not just decided to leave the cabinet formation. At the same time, we are convinced that a majority government with PVV, VVD and BBB would not have led to fruitful cooperation.”

The fact that additional requested figures about government finances were only presented at the formation table on “the last day of the information interviews” was “the straw that broke the already full camel’s back for us”. In addition to “sound public finances”, NSC has also consistently emphasized “respect for the constitution and fundamental rights” and “integrity governance”.

Omtzigt’s departure from the negotiating table has caused a lot of bad blood among the other negotiating parties. Informant Ronald Plasterk also complained about a lack of respect for “the informateur institute” on the part of the NSC leader, who allegedly broke off the conversations with just a text message.

Omtzigt and his second Eddy van Hijum explain their choices so far during two member meetings on February 16 and 22 in Zwolle and Breukelen respectively.
