President Yoon Seok-yeol, who is resuming shuttle diplomacy between the leaders of Korea and Japan after 12 years, arrived in Japan a little while ago with his wife, Kim Kun-hee.
President Yoon, who departed from the Seoul Airport this morning and was greeted by ruling party leaders including Kim Ki-hyeon, began his two-day, one-night official tour, starting with a luncheon meeting with compatriots.
In the afternoon, we will hold a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to discuss proposals for third-party compensation for victims of forced labor announced by the Korean government on the 6th and measures to ease export restrictions.
After the summit, the two leaders agreed to hold a press conference and dinner together, but not to announce a joint statement.
Previously, in an interview with Japanese media such as the Asahi Shimbun reported this morning, President Yoon urged Japan to respond, saying, “The Korean government’s resolution of forced labor is the result of efforts to satisfy both the 1965 Claims Settlement Agreement and the 2018 Supreme Court ruling.” .
In the midst of this, ahead of the Korea-Japan summit, President Yoon attended the NSC Standing Committee of the National Security Council held in the Presidential Office just before departure in relation to North Korea’s launch of a long-range carbon missile into the East Sea this morning.
At this meeting, President Yoon said, “North Korea’s reckless provocation will pay a clear price,” and ordered “to thoroughly conduct the ‘Freedom Shield’ exercise, which is currently underway by the ROK-US joint military exercise.”
In an interview published today, President Yoon repeatedly emphasized that the normalization of GSOMIA is a major agenda for this summit, saying, “It is important to discuss measures to deal with by promptly sharing information related to North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missiles.”
