Nsame and Abubakar are the best of 2020 | Swiss Football League

YB top scorer Jean-Pierre Nsame as well as Kriens striker and Neo-Luganesi Asumah Abubakar have been selected as the best players of 2020 in the Raiffeisen Super League and the Brack.ch Challenge League respectively. The double winner BSC Young Boys also secured two more awards.

Jean-Pierre Nsame (BSC Young Boys) and Asumah Abubakar (SC Kriens) were the dominant ones in the eyes of the expert jury, consisting of all captains and all coaches of the 20 SFL clubs, coaches of the U-national teams of the Swiss Football Association and selected sports journalists Figures in the 2020 calendar year.

Nsame defended his title from the previous year, which no player had ever achieved. In addition, the Frenchman’s success achieved the third YB win in this category in a row. In 2018 Kevin Mbabu had secured the title of best player in the Raiffeisen Super League.

Fourth award for Nsame
Nsame prevailed against strong competitors. Next to him were St.Gallen midfield strategist Jordi Quintillà and Servette’s playmaker Miroslav Stevanovic, BCL Best Player of 2018. The striker with Cameroonian roots earned the new title with his incomparable goal instinct. In the 2020 calendar year, Nsame scored 23 goals in 26 championship games and was also able to put on the top scorer’s crown at the end of the 2019/20 season. With 32 goals in one season, the 27-year-old also set a new goal record for the Super League founded in 2003. For Nsame it is the fourth personal SFL award after the awards BCL Best Player 2016 (with Servette), SFL Best Goal 2019 and RSL Best Player 2019.

A series continues in the BCL
While defenders Michael Lang and Kevin Mbabu have already won the prestigious award in the Raiffeisen Super League in recent years, the BCL Best Player title remains firmly in the hands of the attackers this year as well. Asumah Abubakar is the eighth offensive player since 2013 to win the title of best player in the Brack.ch Challenge League.

Abubakar shone at SC Kriens not only as a goal getter (14 hits in 2020), but also as a template provider (8 assists). With this, the 23-year-old Portuguese with roots in Ghana recently earned the transfer to FC Lugano in the top Swiss division.

Seoane for the third
The winner in the SFL Best Coach category is also an old acquaintance: YB trainer Gerardo Seoane secured this award for the third time in a row after 2018 and 2019. The 42-year-old celebrated his second championship title in summer 2020 with YB and led yellow- Black after 62 years of dry spell to the long-awaited double (championship title / cup win).

It is the current climax of a steep ascent: In January 2018, Seoane was still in charge of the FC Luzern youth team before he was promoted to head coach of Central Switzerland and earned the move to YB with strong performances in summer 2018. His personal soaring continues, however. The Bernese are again at the top of the RSL and are on course for the fourth championship title in a row.

Award for FCSG thanks to Stergiou
Thanks to Leonidas Stergiou, FC St.Gallen 1879 secured the SFL Best Youngster Award, the award for the best young player of the year. Despite his young age, the 19-year-old defender has been part of the “Espen” team for almost two years and already made his debut under Mauro Lustrinelli in the Swiss U21 national team.

Ngamaleu scores goal of 2020
Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu provided the third YB award this year. His pirouette with a spectacular flick in the corner in the game on February 23, 2020 against FC St.Gallen was named SFL Best Goal 2020 by the Swiss football fans.

A total of 20 goals were available for the public vote. Each club sent its favorite into the race. Thanks to Ngamaleu, the SFL Best Goal Award remains in YB hands: its predecessors are Jean-Pierre Nsame (2017), Guillaume Hoarau (2018) and Steve von Bergen (2019).
