NS pays final farewell to legendary train with farewell ride to Stad. Next and last station: the eternal rails

A beautiful picture of Daniel de Ruig. The SGM near Groningen Europa Park.

This is one for the trainophiles. Or trainsexuals, as they are also called in the train community. After 46 years, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) is saying goodbye to the Stadgewestelijk Materieel (SGM) as the first and oldest Sprinter of NS is officially called.

The train is now outdated and the new Sprinter (Sprinter New Generation) is ready to take over the place of the last SGM. A final SGM goes to the Railway Museum, where years of railway history is preserved. But first the SGM visited Groningen with a farewell ride.

As it should

That is quite special, by the way. Because this Stadgewestelijk Materieel actually only drove around in the Randstad. Just before the train was demolished (and recycled), it stopped at the most beautiful station in the Netherlands. As it should. Because everyone knows. See Groningen and you can die.
