NRW Ministry of Education makes it clear: Sowi teachers retain their license to teach

The subject of economics remains a controversial topic in NRW.

Düsseldorf This news from the North Rhine-Westphalian school ministry should reassure teachers and students very much: Pedagogues who have studied social sciences will also be able to teach “business and politics” in the future. The CDU-FDP state government had gradually introduced the subject at all secondary schools.

In the past few weeks, the state government’s plan to soon offer economics and politics as a subject at universities has caused unrest.

As recently as the summer, the Ministry of Education said that this subject would be a prerequisite for teaching the subject in school in the future. So far, the subject has been mainly taught by teachers who have studied social sciences – a combination of politics, sociology and economics.

Educators were up in arms on social media. They had feared they would lose their license to teach economics and politics. The NRW Ministry of Education has now announced: “Teachers who have already been trained in the field of social sciences and have a corresponding teaching qualification have all the necessary prerequisites to teach the new school subject ‘business and politics’ in a professional manner. No further qualification is necessary. ”

Those who are currently studying social sciences should also be able to teach economics and politics afterwards. Furthermore, further teaching staff are to be trained in the subject in advanced training courses.

The education and science union welcomes the message from the NRW Ministry of Education. At the same time, she accuses the ministry of causing the uncertainty itself. “The MSB (Ministry of Schools and Education) has caused confusion and worries with its unclear communication on the teaching qualification access ordinance for the subjects #Social Sciences and #EconomyPolicy,” complain the trade unionists.

Even if the Soviet teachers do not have to worry about their faculties: The criticism of the school subject economics continues. “The subject of social sciences must not be abolished,” is the name of a petition that has already been signed by almost 30,000 people. Proponents of the subject also argue under the hashtag #Sowibleibt, why it should not give way to a school subject economy-politics.

“Separating the disciplines of economics, politics and sociology reduces the chance of understanding economic, political and social structures, as they are closely linked,” explain the initiators.

The subject of economics was a big controversy even before it was introduced in schools. While companies, the CDU and FDP have been pushing for more economic education for years, the NRW opposition consisting of the SPD and the Greens and the trade unions are calling for more political education.
