NRK has a special function in the country’s emergency plans. During a state of emergency or war, the national broadcaster has a special responsibility to ensure that the population receives information from the government. The statutory duty applies to radio broadcasting, as well as information through NRK 1.
Recently, several NRK employees have experienced that outsiders have tried to map the media house’s broadcast-critical functions. In an email DN has gained access to, NRK’s security department warns employees against people who apparently try to map who works in different departments, what working hours different employees have or what services they provide.
“In recent days, several people at NRK have been called by strangers who have asked about broadcast-critical services and for details about specific people at NRK. The phone calls have been so special that the security department chooses to inform you,” the email says.
Head of security at NRK, Øyvind Vasaasen, tells DN that the situation has been reported to the police.
– Have the calls continued?
– No more have been reported.

– When did they end?
– We have no reason to believe that this type of information gathering will stop. We are dealing with the fact that NRK could be exposed to this, although we do not know anything concrete about the extent at any given time, he says.

Does not succeed
Vasaasen will not disclose how many calls may be involved.
– What does NRK fear this could be?
– There may of course be innocent calls, but there may also be someone looking to map critical functions in our business.
– NRK has an important social responsibility and we work openly and systematically to make NRK employees aware that they may be exposed to this type of information gathering and that it is important to report it. The fact that NRK Security is notified by employees of such incidents shows that the work on this is working.

– Have those who called managed to map out internal conditions at NRK, such as broadcast-critical functions or the like?
– We have no reason to believe that.

– Have you contacted PST or the police about this?
– We routinely report such situations to the police, he says. (Terms) Copyright Dagens Næringsliv AS and/or our suppliers.
