NRK bleeds: – It was about time

NRK shuts down Sports Review, keeps commentators from the major leagues at home and makes major cuts to radio offerings.

Statsskanalen will save NOK 300 million and is now also offering severance packages to all employees.

In the FRP, who wants to cutting NRK by three billion in its alternative budget is not a pity huge.

– I don’t want to think too much whether sports or other things should be cut, the reality however is that NRK also needs to realize that there is no unlimited access to taxpayers’ money, says Silje Hjemdal (Frp) to the Dagbladet.

– The screen for reality

Hjemdal says “time to cut NRK”.

– NRK has a unique position and has been shielded from the realities and competition that the rest of Medie-Norge has to contend with, continues Hjemdal.

There are between 80 and 120 of them who have to go through NRK. The goal is to reduce the number from three to two digits, according to NTB. This applies to everything NRK.

The popular TV show Anne Lindmo is also affected the cuts in NRK, which will be cut with two programs in the autumn. “Cash for the Evening”, with Else Kåss Furuseth, is cut with three broadcasts to save money.

What should be NRK

Silje Hjemdal and FRP point out that the state channel, with its annual budget of around six billion, has been competitive with the rest of the market.

– It is also important to remember that it is problematic when a large state-funded player has more favorable and protected conditions, this could have the effect of stimulating competition.

Hjemdal also points to NRK’s large investment in digital journalism, where dozens of journalists can work over a long period of time on one project or article.

– You can, for example, look at NRK’s massive investment in digital platforms as well – which local or regional newspaper has the opportunity to do the same? I note that more and more people are gradually thinking about this and wondering what NRK should be. I think it’s a sign of health. More people should welcome this debate, says Hjemdal.

NRK: – A healthy competition

Broadcast director Vibeke Fürst Haugen was subjected to criticism from Silje Hjemdal.

– The Norwegian Media Authority has documented in several reports that there is great media diversity and healthy competition in the Norwegian media market. NRK has a broad and comprehensive mission to cover the entire country and the entire population. This is the basis for the financing, comments Fürst Haugen.
