NRC Brings Back Russia Correspondent Due to Insecurity for Journalists

NOS Nieuws•vandaag, 04:11

The editors-in-chief of NRC brings back Russia correspondent Eva Cukier from Moscow. The newspaper no longer finds it responsible for Cukier to do her work in Russia.

“Unfortunately, we had to make this decision due to the continuing insecurity in working conditions for journalists in Russia,” say editor-in-chief René Moerland in his own newspaper.

Cukier has been a correspondent for NRC since 2020. She would have liked to have continued herself, she says. Cukier will continue to report on Russia and the region from the Netherlands.

Journalist arrested

Since the start of its large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has enacted a number of harsh military censorship laws that restrict the work of journalists. At the end of March, Wall Street Journal journalist Even Gershkovich was arrested on suspicion of espionage. His arrest is seen as a tipping point in the working climate for journalists.

NOS News brought Russia correspondent Iris de Graaf back to the Netherlands at the beginning of May because of the deteriorating circumstances. Geert Groot Koerkamp is still in Russia for the NOS.
