Tam Yaozong, a member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, announced that he will no longer run for the Hong Kong District People’s Congress because he is not young and the post can be filled by other more suitable people.

After attending the election meeting of the 14th Hong Kong People’s Congress, Tam Yiu-chung said that he had learned a lot in the past five years, especially that the Standing Committee’s legislative work in recent years is directly related to Hong Kong, including formulating national security laws and improving the electoral system. He has the opportunity to participate in it. It is very interesting. In the future, I will continue to care about the country’s development, offer advice and suggestions, and serve the Hong Kong society.

Asked whether the central government held him back, Tan Yaozong said that this personal decision was made in July and reflected on the central government. The central government respects his opinion and he was elected a member of the bureau during the election meeting. he proves that he will not participate in the general election.

On whether former Chief Executive Carrie Lam is a suitable successor, Tam Yaozong said he would not speculate on who will run for election, nor would it be appropriate to comment on who should run for election. She stressed that the deputies of the National People’s Congress have their own considerations for the requirements of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and will find suitable candidates.

When asked whether he had any regrets about withdrawing after his successful resignation or about being sanctioned by the United States, Tam Yiu-chung believed he had an opportunity to contribute to Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability and felt honored to participate in legislative work and also demonstrate that they work properly.
