Now you get Norwegian Christmas apples in the store

Behind the initiative are Norwegian apple producers, represented by Telefrukt AS, the label scheme New Norway from the Norwegian Food Foundation and the Information Office for Fruit and Vegetables (OFG).

In the three-year project period, the goal is to extend the season for Norwegian apples and achieve a market share of approx. 20% for Norwegian apples sold in the winter months from December to March, which will increase sales by 3,400 tonnes annually and build preference for Norwegian-produced apples among consumers.

– The Norwegian apples are crunchy, smell good, are tasty and are perfect as

a healthy snack on the go now in the Christmas rush. Apples contain dietary fiber which gives a good stomach feeling and antioxidants we need in a busy everyday life, says head of brand building at OFG, Silje Thoresen Tandberg in a press release.

And not least – apples are a natural ingredient in the many delicious meals we eat during the Christmas holidays.

Usually the season for Norwegian apples is over in November, but modern Norwegian apple producers have developed new technology that extends the season. The technology used is called ULO.

ULO stands for Ultra low oxygen. The oxygen level in air is 21%. Through ULO, the oxygen level in the storage rooms is lowered from 21% and down to 1% by blowing out the air in the storage room and supplying the nitrogen to the storage rooms with the help of a nitrogen generator. At the same time as the oxygen level (O2) is lowered to 1%, the CO2 level increases to 1%.

Winter apples in hibernation

In this way, the apples are put to “sleep” and the ripening process or the decomposition process is slower. Thus, the apples stay healthy longer.

It is this process that keeps the apples crispy and juicy for more than half a year after harvest.

Therefore, you should eat apples

Apples have a high content of dietary fiber which is beneficial for digestion and which gives a good feeling of satiety.

Apples have the most vitamin C right under the peel, so eat apples with the peel on. Storage apples contain slightly more vitamin C than the early varieties.

Vitamin C strengthens the immune system and increases the absorption of iron from other foods.

Apple varieties

Apple varieties included in the project are Red Aroma , Elstar and the latest apple variety Rubinstep . These are particularly suitable for storage and the apples stay crisp and fresh for as long as half a year after harvest.
