Now you can tag yourself on Twitter

A common way to get someone harassed on Twitter is to tag the person in a negative comment that more or less openly encourages followers to give in to the person. This is easy because they can tap on the name to get to the profile, and the victim will be notified that they have been mentioned for each new response.

Now, Twitter has finally added a popular feature that can reduce the effect of it and make it harder to quickly create that kind of drive. From now on, you can “leave the call”, which has the following effect:

  • You are no longer tagged. Your username is still visible, but becomes plain text and the tweet and its response are therefore not automatically visible anywhere, for example when someone is looking for mentions of you.
  • Nobody can tag you again in the same conversation (reply thread).
  • You will not receive any further notifications from the conversation (but can still see it if you look it up).

Someone who still wants to see your profile and write to you after seeing you mentioned in a Twitter thread you have left must copy your username and paste it into the search field, and what they write to you becomes completely new tweet and not part of the thread.
