Seven in their twenties showing every aspect of their life for three months. The GoPlay ‘Now what’ program offers viewers the very first Flemish docusoap. This promises to be a mix of reality and documentary, in which vlogs and social media are also an important part of the story, in addition to the classic work with the camera and some fixed cameras in the house. So in the year 2022, where everything can be shared, in any way. “We follow our seven young people in every aspect of their lives,” explains Warner Bros. creative director Jess Houbregs. from. “The residents themselves decide at any time who and what they want to portray. We just register and are allowed to be part of their lives as a team. This is unique. The only agreement we have is that they live in the house for three months – and in the meantime we follow them. “

“As creators, this is very exciting,” Houbregs continues. “Normally you work with a scenario, but now you don’t. But that banality makes it interesting. Also, no two days of shooting are alike: we work completely to the rhythm of the residents. We distill a ten-minute episode from that every day. Therefore we never know in advance what exactly will be shown. This format differs from series like ‘Big Brother’, a program where there are assignments and candidates have to leave the house. In ‘Now What’ this is not the case and we respect their privacy. So there are no cameras in the bathroom or bedrooms. (laughs) “

Good advice
Nona, 22, is one of the participants in “Now what”. In everyday life she works at Studio Brussel, where she works as digital creative helps support the morning show. For the past few months she has been residing in the mama hotel in Averbode, but will spend the next 90 days in Antwerp. She doesn’t find it a problem to share her entire life with viewers during that time. “People can have a fun party, a crazy time at work, and a flop date,” she seems. “The other participants are exactly the same, however. We want to provide a realistic picture of what life looks like for people in their early twenties and how we, each in a different way, define our place in society. Some days this produces a lot of material, but of course there are also more boring moments. So there is less time on such a day of registration. (laughs) “

For three months I had a taste of life in a big city and it cost me next to nothing. Our house, gas and electricity are paid for.

Nona herself is very active as a vlogster. She has been doing it since she was fourteen. “I record videos every day, in which I record my life. In the meantime, I have about twelve thousand followers on YouTube, who are usually a little younger than me. I try to give them good advice. For example, when I moved into a room for my studies (applied audiovisual communication and radio, ed), I told you what you really need to survive. A new phase in life can be frightening, and therefore any support is welcome. “

Living in a big city
For “Now What”, however, Nona has to go it alone and take the plunge into the unknown unaided. “After I graduated, there were a lot of question marks,” she says. “During the last year of my studies, I was allowed to do an internship at Studio Brussel. Initially, he was not sure that I would be able to continue doing this job afterwards ”. Without job security, Nona thought it was a good idea to rent, and the newly graduated woman could not continue living in her student room. So she went back to Averbode and went back to live with her mother and her brother. “However, after a while I got two nice messages: I was allowed to continue my work after the internship and I was allowed to participate in ‘Now what’. For three months I had a taste of life in a big city and it cost me next to nothing. Our house, gas and electricity are paid for. “

The Public Broadcasting Service found that Nona’s participation in the SBS program was not a problem. “Of course I discussed it in advance,” she says. “But no chef has seen a problem with this. On the contrary: they completely grant me this unique opportunity. My colleagues also gave me good advice: they told me not to fall in love with one of mine room mates. (laughs) ”

You need a lot of love
However, there is a possibility, Nona admits. The young woman currently has no partner and makes no secret of being bisexual. “Six months ago my relationship broke up, and it was quite a coup,” she says. “It took me a while to get back on track, but I feel ready to go out again. Though I wonder how would the real one be for me? Living with others inspires me – apart from a stressful who are night owls – no fear, but I’m afraid of being left alone. I am a person who needs a lot of love and I have not yet found the person who can give me enough affection. However, being bisexual, some people think I shouldn’t worry about it, as presumably there are a lot of options. It doesn’t work like that: it really has to snap in my head ”.

I hate it when people are excluded. In the past, I have had serious arguments with roommates. So if one of my co-residents in Antwerp turns out to be non-tolerant, I won’t be silent. They have been warned of this.

“Jonatan Medart expressed that very well in his coming out video,” Nona said. “I recognized a lot of things he said. Although there are also differences: I’ve never been afraid to tell my mother. He has always stressed that it doesn’t matter to her who I went home with. With Jonathan it was bigger struggle. It must not have been easy to make that video. Very nice that you dare to be so open. I can only hope that, however modest it may be, I can also increase the acceptance of LGBTGQ + people. I am a person who does not hide his feelings and I will stand on the barricades – certainly for this issue, but also for topics like racism. I hate it when people are excluded. In the past, I have had serious arguments with roommates. So if one of my co-residents in Antwerp turns out to be non-tolerant, I won’t be silent. They have been warned of this. (winks)”
