There are usually not as many giant transfers during the January window as during the summer window when most clubs are in the middle of the season – but that does not mean that it does not happen.
Fernando Torres to Chelsea, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Arsenal, Bruno Fernandes to Manchester United, Virgil Van Dijk to Liverpool and Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona are some of the biggest transfers.
For a Swedish example, Juventus recruited Dejan Kulusevski during the January window 2020.
Erling Braut Haaland
The Norwegian superstar is without a doubt the absolute biggest name under the winter window. But why would Borussia Dortmund want to release one of the world’s best strikers?
Well, because this is the last transfer window before his buyout clause takes effect.
When Borussia Dortmund bought Erling Braut Haaland from RB Salzburg, the super agent Mino Raiola (including Zlatan in his stable) negotiated a clause that allows clubs in June 2022 to buy the Norwegian for a sale price – 75 million euros. According to the site Transfermarkt, the market value is double.
If Dortmund are to get currency for their star, they want to sell already now in January.
Rumors of a possible January transfer began to gain momentum when Haaland after Borussia Dortmund’s win against Greuter Feurth on December 15 was seen waving something that can be interpreted as a goodbye to the club’s supporters – the match was Dortmund’s last at home before the current winter break.
Haaland has scored 76 goals and 20 assists in 75 games in Dortmund’s shirt, a result that places him as one of the best in the world.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Manchester City are likely destinations if a transfer becomes a reality.
