Tracy Oliver said at the festival to promote the second season of her Amazon Prime series Harlem that she had news about Girls Trip 2: “It’s going to happen! I can say it. The news is official. And to although the producer of the original film, Will Packer, might kill me, we’re going to shoot it in Ghana.” Yes, Ghana has been chosen as the girls’ meeting place and, most importantly, all the leading actors, top American actresses – Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, “Queen Latifah” and Tiffany Haddish – will be back in full force!
While plans for the long-awaited sequel appear to be already in place, Oliver reveals that there is no set timeline yet (namely, we don’t know what year or date we’ll see the film premiere), as the sequel is currently only in the scripting process. She also revealed that the stars of the movie will be taking advantage of this year’s Afrochella music festival in Ghana (one of the country’s most popular international music festivals, which has featured massive acts like Burna Boy, Stonebwoy and Shatte Wale). Also, the women will get to know the capital of the country, Accra, while preparing for the filming.
The first film, Girls Trip, was a box office hit, grossing over $140 million worldwide on a budget of just $16 million. After its hugely successful theatrical release in 2017, fans immediately began clamoring for a sequel, which director Malcolm D. Lee honored in 2018, saying he’d love to make a sequel to “appease the nation.”
“Girls Trip” follows a group of four girlfriends known as the Flossy Posse, a name they came up with during their college days. After many years, they reunite on vacation to go on an adventurous “trip” to a music festival in New Orleans. One of these friends is Ryan, a lifestyle guru who is invited to be the keynote speaker at the festival, and she decides to bring her childhood friends Sasha, Lisa, and Dina with her. The authors of the film created it, inspired by their own life experiences.
In March 2020, Haddish revealed that she and her Flossy Posse co-stars had met via Zoom to brainstorm a possible Girls Trip sequel.
The leading actresses have yet to comment on this latest news.
