Now it’s going to be tough for workers in the US

The Republican governor of Massachusetts gave last week knownthat all 42,000 employees in the state would have to provide proof of their full vaccination by October 17. Otherwise, they faced “disciplinary measures up to and including dismissal”.

San Francisco is preparing to suspend nearly two dozen police and fire service employees, who have refused to disclose their vaccination status. Hundreds of employees in other departments face a similar fate as that San Francisco Chronicle reported. San Francisco was the first major city in the United States to require all city employees to be vaccinated without a religious or medical exemption.

Ten weeks after the final FDA approval of the vaccines, all San Francisco employees must be vaccinated. The extension of the deadline apparently has legal reasons. As long as a vaccine is “experimental”, i.e. phase 3 of the test has not been completed, there is no legal basis for mandatory vaccination. A decision by the FDA is expected within the next two weeks.

While quite a few Republican-run US states have legally ruled out compulsory vaccination for public sector employees, Montana is the only one so far where this ban also applies to private companies – because of discrimination. Unvaccinated healthcare workers may, however, be required to wear masks.

One obstacle to stricter vaccination regulations is the labor shortage, writes CNN. According to a survey by the KFF think tank, 50 percent of non-vaccinated employees said they would quit if they were required to be vaccinated.

42 percent of vaccinated workers are against compulsory vaccination, only 43 percent are in favor.

Even among hospitals, there is no compulsory vaccination for most employers: According to the American Hospital Association, only about a third of all hospitals require vaccinations. And many are even located in places where health care workers are required to have vaccinations.

The worse the employees are paid, the greater are in the opinion of CNN the inhibitions of employees to enforce compulsory vaccination.
