(Elbil24): Not all countries have the same weather variations as we have here in Norway, and to keep the windshield clean there are therefore two types of washer fluid in this country, designed for summer and winter respectively.

To the typist

If you filled up your tank this summer, there’s a high chance you bought some summer washer fluid. This is suitable for removing pollen, road dust, dead insect remains and the like, but usually has a freezing point of about minus 5 degrees.

During these periods, you therefore run the risk of it freezing on the tank and that not a drop will come out when you press the lever on the steering wheel.

Winter washer fluid has antifreeze added, which means it can withstand lower temperatures. Usually it will be -15 degrees here, but you will find exact information about this on the packaging.

If the temperature drops below that, you can add washer fluid concentrate to get an even lower freezing point. Although – at temperatures this cold, washer fluid is rarely appropriate to use anyway.

Stupid to misuse

The two types should be used in their respective seasons. Summer washer fluid is therefore not suitable in winter because it can freeze, and winter washer fluid is not suitable in summer, among other things because the alcohol it contains dries the insect proteins that have hit the windshield, so that you will struggle to clean the window.

A common recommendation is therefore to change the washer fluid when changing wheels for the season. You can easily do this by using what is left in the tank and refilling with the right washer fluid for next season.

Alternatively, you can add a little washer fluid concentrate if you still have some summer washer fluid left in the tank. However, it’s good to know roughly how much is left in the tank – on a random product we found, for example, that the mix ratio was 1 to 4 for -8 degrees and 1 to 1 for -25 degrees.
