Nerves can play tricks on television. And if not, ask Azucena, one of the last contestants of ‘Now I fall’, the Antena 3 contest presented by Arturo Valls. After being blocked when answering a question, the woman has starred in an unprecedented elimination in the seven years of competition, surprising both the presenter and the audience.
After eliminating her first opponent, and taking a prize of 1,000 euros, Azucena went straight to the next rival, Kai. Seconds later, Arturo Valls asked him about the name of the first vice president of the Spanish government when the euro came into circulation in Spain in reference to Mariano Rajoy, who years later would become the Prime Minister.
‘_ _ R _ A N _ R _ _ _ Y’
In order to make things easier, the presenter offered him several letters that half completed the panel (R, A, N, R and Y). Once this was done, Arturo Valls started the 30-second countdown and the contestant began to think of names of possible politicians who could have served during that time.
Despite this, he had three wild cards to bounce the question back to his opponent in case he did not know the answer. In fact, when there were barely five seconds left until time was up, the presenter advised Azucena that she would pass the turn to her rival. However, the contestant got stuck, so she was not able to pass the question.
“It tastes awful to me, but that’s the way the rules are”
After consuming the regulatory 30 seconds, Arturo Valls (with a face of disbelief) explained to Azucena that it had to have happened before the time was up for the question to bounce back to his opponent: “It tastes awful to me but that’s the rules, but for the first time in history, with three jokers, you have to go down. And also with this answer. Mariano Rajoy!”.
The presenter explained to the public that some contestant had not arrived in time to pass the turn to the rival. However, none of them had the three wild cards like Azucena. Therefore, the contestant fell through the classic trapdoor of the show and gave way to Kai, thus becoming the first person to go home with all three wild cards intact.
