“Hesburger” and “Neste” started circular economy cooperation at the end of 2021, and from January 2022 to October 2022, more than 148,000 liters of used cooking oil have already been obtained from “Hesburger” restaurants in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, converting it about “Neste MY” renewable diesel fuel. Looking to the future, “Hesburger” aims to achieve that by 2025, 100% of the company’s logistics in the Baltic countries use only renewable diesel fuel.
“We have been pioneers in our industry for years, developing various “green” initiatives, from installing solar panels and manufacturing employee uniforms from recycled materials to including vegetarian products on the restaurant menu. Realizing that transportation is one of the reasons contributing to global warming, we have have been working to find ways to reduce the carbon footprint of our logistics. Every year our restaurants in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and also in Finland produce a huge amount of used cooking oil – up to 420 tons. Therefore, I am very pleased that, in cooperation with “Neste”, the used cooking oil, together with other organic waste, will be transformed into renewable diesel fuel that can be used by our supply trucks, thus creating a significant circular economy cooperation project,” says Ieva Salmela, Hesburger’s director of marketing and international development.
Neste’s goal is to become a world leader in the field of renewable and circular economy solutions. Also, starting from 2030, we want to help our customers and partners reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million tons per year. We are happy to see the business the growing environmental interest in sustainability throughout the Baltic region, which encourages companies to look for partnerships and joint solutions to fight climate change. The cooperation with Hesburger is a great example of how companies can make a difference in the local market through circular economy partnerships, making an impact on a global scale,” says Jone Sestakauskaite, “Neste” sustainable partnership manager in the field of marketing and services in the Baltics.
According to “Neste” estimates, by replacing the fossil fuel consumed annually by “Hesburger” restaurant delivery vehicles in the Baltics and Finland with renewable diesel fuel, the annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will be equivalent to removing 350 private cars from the roads.
